Kali Sharda Rafting Expedition
Kali Sharda rafting expedition is carried out on the lower section of Kali river (also called Kali Sharda), which forms a natural border between India and Nepal. This trip is disconnected from roads and civilization as the river enters a wide gorge from Pancheshwar and flows through the Terai jungles. Camp sites are heavenly on isolated remote beaches.
Region here is rich in flora and fauna, and one can easily sight a wide variety of rare birds and wildlife. It is one of a kind trip as we raft right in the middle of two countries. These campsites are white sand beaches, far off from any traces of civilization. After a long day of rafting, they will serve you just about right.
Our trip starts from Pancheshwar, and finishes at Tanakpur. This is a high volume river with mostly up to class III kind of rapids and one class IV rapid. In all we would be rafting for three days, and one day would be for transit. We would be camping for 03 nights at different locations as we travel down the river.
It is an exotic self supported rafting experience which has all the elements of remote wilderness, beautiful pristine beaches and action packed whitewater.
Itinerary
Kathgodam to Pancheshwar
Our expedition begins at Kathgodam or Rudrapur, depending on which station suits the participants. There are pickups arranged from Rudrapur and Kathgodam Railway Station from 6.00 am onwards, keeping in mind that most people will be arriving via the overnight trains. Most participants opt for the Roads & Journeys pick up and we assume the same in your case. In case you do not want the Roads & Journeys pickup, you will have to make your own travel arrangements. Once the participants have gotten together, we drive to Lohaghat or Pancheshwar, which is a 6 hour scenic drive. This is where the river Kali enters a wide gorge and flows through the Terai jungles. It also happens to be the point of Kali’s confluence with Saryu. It is here that we set up camp at the confluence of rivers Saryu and Kali. The rest of the day is yours to explore the nearby woods and forests, or test the waters that you will be embarking upon the next day. The nights are spent beside a warm bonfire and a hot meal cooked in the open. Spend the night at the confluence and soak in its scenic surroundings while falling asleep to the sound of the gushing water.
Pancheshwar To Sonali Gaon
The next day begins early with a detailed safety briefing, we are ready to take on the rapids. Our camping gear and luggage packed into waterproof dry bags and loaded onto the cargo rafts. The river will be pacy, and participants can look forward to several exciting rapids. By the end of the ride, we will reach our camp on a beach by the river. Starry nights and bonfires, maybe even a barbecue, await you for the night.
Raft Sonali Gaon to Pari Gaon
We continue our white water rafting journey early with the day’s highlight being the long class IV rapid, the Chooka. Scout the rapid before you finally raft down to the Chooka to set up camp. After the Chooka, the river flows through the Terai jungles and that is where you will encounter several rapids. The forests around you will give you a sense of mystery and you will be left wondering what secrets they hold. Be assured that the enchanting woods and nature around will add to your adventure. As we finish the day we again Camp besides the river on a beautiful beach.
Raft Pari Gaon to Boom, thereafter drive to Kathgodam
The day begins as we casually float past the Terai jungles, negotiating around some exciting rapids. The region is known for its flora and fauna, and one can easily sight a wide variety of rare birds and wildlife. Also, it is the final day that you can soak in the excitement of knowing that you are rafting between two countries – India and Nepal. By the end, we reach a place called Boom near Tanakpur. The river rafting expedition officially ends here and participants are transferred to Kathgodam/Rudrapur to board the overnight train for Delhi.
